He inched forward, speaking low and steady, his voice barely louder than the forest’s breath. The moose’s dark eyes met his, wide and uncertain. Jacob knelt, hands shaking as he worked the wire cutters around the cruel snare.

The moose stayed still, its gaze fixed on him—heavy with pain, heavy with trust. Jacob’s fingers moved quickly, peeling the twisted metal from raw flesh. The wounds made his stomach twist, but the moment the wire fell away, relief surged through him. The worst was over.
From his pack, he pulled the small medical kit. He wasn’t a veterinarian, but years watching his mother tend to injured wildlife had taught him enough. He cleaned the gash, wincing as the moose shuddered, then wrapped it tight in gauze.

When he was done, he lingered, unsure what to do next. The moose trembled but no longer bled. Then, slowly, it stretched its neck and brushed its tongue against his hand—a rough, warm gesture that caught him off guard. Gratitude.
Blinking hard, Jacob turned to the campsite. The tent’s zipper hung broken, the fire pit scattered like it had been abandoned in haste. He raised his camera and began snapping pictures, each click a piece of evidence the rangers couldn’t dismiss.

He kept working the camera, capturing every detail. The torn tent, the crushed gear, the hasty exit—it all told a story.
