The desk officer sighed and finally looked up, his gaze heavy with exhaustion. “Listen, kid,” he muttered. “Do you know how many crazy stories we hear every single day? If we logged every ‘shadow in the woods’ or ‘mystery figure,’ we’d never have time for real crimes. You want us to care? Bring something solid.”
The dismissal hit harder than Jacob expected. He sank back into his seat, staring at the floor. He had no proof—just his instincts and the bone-deep certainty that he wasn’t wrong. His hands curled into fists. He had seen what he’d seen. If no one else believed him, he’d just have to make them.
