Jacob swallowed hard. He nudged the drone closer, the camera revealing a deep, fresh gash tearing into the animal’s leg. It looked like the cruel work of a snare. His stomach twisted.
Instinct took over. He adjusted the angle, making sure the wound and the camp were in clear view. This was it—footage the rangers couldn’t ignore. But before he could capture more, the moose’s eyes snapped open.

The animal exploded into motion, thrashing wildly. Its antlers swung with lethal force. One strike clipped the drone, sending the feed into a dizzying spiral. Jacob’s monitor flickered once, twice, and then went black. Static hissed in his ears.
He sat frozen for a moment, breath short and sharp. The only proof he had—gone. And the moose was still out there, bleeding and alone. If he went to the rangers empty-handed, they’d laugh him out of the station again. But leaving it would mean letting the animal die.

Jacob’s jaw tightened. He could waste precious hours trying to replace the drone—or he could go now. The moose didn’t have hours.
He stuffed a digital camera and a small medical kit into his backpack, yanked on his boots, and slung the pack over his shoulder. He wasn’t waiting for permission or belief. He was going in.
